Performing outside in the summer months on drums is so much fun. You might have seen some of the many videos I have posted of me playing in various outdoor locations around NYC. Playing drums alone is fun, but what is even more fun is playing to music, or with friends. Many parks don't have power outlets, so you need to bring some kind of wireless speaker or amplifier if you want to rock outside.
NYC is a bit strange when it comes to sound in public places. You can play drums anywhere you want on city property, but when it comes to amplified sound, you technically need a permit to do it. This doesn't mean me and my friends haven't done it without one though. Usually, the worst that will happen is they just ask you to stop. But I have read stories of people being fined for this, but it has never happened to me.
That being said, check your local laws and know the risks (if any) before you go lugging a big Bluetooth PA to your local park.
So what kind of speaker should you use? It depends on your budget and what you are doing.
- This Pyle PPHP1299WU.5 Portable PA system has more than enough power for small park performances. This would be good for small bands needing to run multiple instruments and vocals. Having the two wireless mics is a nice bonus. This one runs about $350.
- Next on my list comes in various configurations at different power levels, and is an excellent deal if you do not need as many inputs as the one above. They offer an 8", 10", 12", and even 15" versions. The 8" is $95 and the 15" is just over $150. You could still use multiple instruments if you had a small wireless mixer.
